Separating propylene and propane by rectification is difficult due to the small difference in boiling points of the two components. The low boiling fraction components can be pre-separated in a separate column using propylene as a refrigerant to cool the reflux condenser, after which the final separation of propane and propylene can be performed in a large column, best divided into two sections, operating at ambient temperature.
